2010 Risk-Adjusted Renal Failure Rates Following CABG Surgery

19 hospitals in Washington perform cardiac surgery. One significant complication that can occur following cardiac surgery is renal insufficiency or kidney failure resulting in the need for dialysis (either permanently or temporarily). All 19 of these hospitals participate in COAP, a statewide quality improvement program and are working hard to keep the incidence of this complication extremely low.

Results for this measure refer to the percentage of patients in Washington State that either required kidney dialysis or had a significant decrease in their kidney function following their coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Because we have changed the way this outcome is measured, we are only comparing the previous 3 years. Individual hospital results for 2010 range from a low of 0% of patients who develop renal failure, to a high of 7.6%.
