Percentage of Patients with Renal Failure Requiring Kidney Dialysis Following CABG Surgery, Risk-Adjusted Rate, 2008

19 hospitals in Washington perform cardiac surgery. One significant complication that can occur following cardiac surgery is kidney failure, resulting in the need for dialysis (either permanently or temporarily). All 19 of these hospitals participate in COAP, a statewide quality improvement program, and are working hard to keep the incidence of this complication extremely low.

Results for this measure refer to the percentage of patients in Washington State that required kidney dialysis following their coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. The statewide average is quite low and has stayed fairly consistent over the past few years. Because we have changed the way this outcome is measured, we are not able to compare the results for 2008 with previous years’ results. Individual hospital results for 2008 range from a low of 0% of patients requiring dialysis, to a high of 7.4%.

Ask your surgeon about dialysis rates following coronary artery bypass surgery at your hospital and your particular risk factors. Encourage your surgeon to ask about their COAP report regarding dialysis rates so they know you care!
